From May to September the Cape Wrath ferry and Mini bus services carry
passengers from Keoldale to Cape Wrath Lighthouse.
At the ferry port (which is 2.6 miles from the
Durness Visitors Centre,
heading south towards Rhiconich on the A838), there are 23 car parking places
and a shelter where passengers can wait for the ferry.
NOTE - at the moment, there are no public conveniences at the ferry port, nor on the Cape side.
Transporting the two mini buses over the Kyle of Durness only occurs at the beginning and end of the season
on a purpose built raft.
At all other times, there is a small ferry boat that transports the passengers over the Kyle.
Until recently the raft was a home constructed barge type vessel made from oil drums and palates.
Now, a purpose-built barge has been acquired to facilitate the crossing of the mini-buses over the water - as illustrated above.
Timetable
The frequency of the summer season ferry service is very much dependant on the state of the
tide and
weather conditions - although in general, the operators attempt to keep to the following timetable;
May - first sailing, 11:00 am and on demand thereafter.
June, July & August - first sailing, 09:30 am.
September - first sailing 09:30 am until mid-September when it reverts to 11:00 am for the remainder of the season.
Sunday sailings from 11:00 am onwards.
Check with the ferryman (Tel. 01971 511246, Mob. 07719 678729) or notice board at ferry port for time of next ferry crossing.
The ferryman can also be contacted via e-mail or through his own website http://capewrathferry.co.uk/
Sometimes about two hours either side of low tide, the service can stop altogether.
There is a channel on the Cape Wrath side, so sometimes a smaller boat is used to
ferry passengers across the channel and they have to walk over the sand back to Keoldale.
